CT angiography for the assessment of EVAR complications : a pictorial review
2022
Aortic aneurysm; Blood vessel prosthesis implantation; Endovascular procedures Aneurisma aórtico; Implantación de prótesis de vasos sanguíneos; Procedimientos endovasculares Aneurisma aòrtic; Implantació de pròtesis de vasos sanguinis; Procediments endovasculars Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is a minimally invasive treatment proposed as an alternative to open repair in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms. EVAR consists in a stent-graft placement within the aorta in order to exclude the aneurysm from arterial circulation and reduce the risk of rupture. Knowledge of the various types of devices is mandatory because some stents/grafts are more frequently associated with complication…
Short-term outcomes of colorectal cancer surgery in older patients : a novel nomogram predicting postoperative morbi-mortality
2022
Abstract Purpose To analyze short-term outcomes of curative-intent cancer surgery in all adult patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer undergoing surgery from January 2010 to December 2019 and determine risk factors for postoperative complications and mortality. Methods Retrospective study conducted at a single tertiary university institution. Patients were stratified by age into two groups: < 75 years and ≥ 75 years. Primary outcome was the influence of age on 30-day complications and mortality. Independent risk factors for postoperative adverse events or mortality were analyzed, and two novel nomograms were constructed. Results Of the 1486 patients included, 580 were older (≥ 75 year…

Prognostic implications of surgical specimen quality on the oncological outcomes of open and laparoscopic surgery in mid and low rectal cancer
2021
Abstract Purpose Determine differences in pathologic outcomes between laparoscopic (LAP) and open surgery (OPEN) for mid and low rectal cancer and its influence in long-term oncological outcomes. Methods Retrospective case matched study at a tertiary institution. Adults with rectal cancer below 12 cm from the anal verge operated between January 2005 and September 2018 were included. Primary outcomes were quality of specimen, overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and local recurrence (LR). Results The study included 311 patients, LAP = 108 (34.7%), OPEN = 203 (65,3%). A successful resection was accomplished in 81% of the LAP group and in 84.5% of the OPEN (p = 0.505). No differ…
“Near-TME”: proposed standardisation of the technique for proctectomy in male patients with ulcerative colitis
2022
Abstract Background The aim of the present study was to describe in detail an approach to proctectomy in ulcerative colitis (UC), which can be standardized; near-total mesorectal excision (near-TME), to prevent injuries to autonomic pelvic nerves and subsequent sexual dysfunction. Methods We demonstrate the technique ex vivo on a cadaver from a male patient in lithotomy position and on a sagittal section of a male pelvis. We also demonstrate the technique in vivo in two male patients diagnosed with UC, with no history of sexual dysfunction or bowel neoplasia. The study was performed at the Human Embryology and Anatomy Department. University of Valencia, Spain. Results The posterolateral dis…
Correlation Between Ischemic Retinal Accidents and Radial Peripapillary Capillaries in the Optic Nerve Using Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiograph…
2017
Background: Perfusion of the optic nerve has been widely studied using fluorescein angiography (FAG), which is currently regarded as the criterion standard. However, FAG has adverse effects associated with intravenous contrast administration and is limited in its capacity to characterize and stratify the different vascular layers of the optic nerve and retina. The use of new imaging techniques, such as optical coherence tomographic angiography (Angio-OCT), is therefore important. Aim: A qualitative description is made of the vascular layers of the optic nerve and of how vascular events affect radial peripapillary capillaries (RPC). Two patients with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), …
Intrasession and Intersession Repeatability of a new PCT-200 Corneal Topographer on Calibrated Steel Surfaces and Healthy Eyes
2010
PURPOSE: To assess intrasession and intersession repeatability of a new tilted-cone, Placido-disc based corneal topographer (PCT-200, Optopol Tech., Poland) on calibrated steel surfaces and healthy human eyes. METHODS: Five repeated measures of surface topography were obtained on a set of four different calibrated steel spherical surfaces and on a sample 30 healthy human eyes in each of two sessions. Variance of apical radius, eccentricity and Fourier Indices was assessed both within and between sessions using analysis of variance (ANOVA), paired samples t-test and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). RESULTS: Repeated measurements on calibrated steel surfaces and human eye sample of …
